The Sumpter Gold Rush........
Sumpter is a small, sleepy historic gold mining town with less than 200 year-round residents who live here in the breathtaking Elkhorn Mountains of Eastern Oregon. Sumpter Oregon was once a thriving gold mining town with a population of well over 5000. And, with gold mines still producing ore from the original gold vein coupled with rising gold prices, would be gold prospectors both young and old are drawn to Sumpter in search of the yellow dream and to explore Sumpter's rich gold mining heritage in both the restored Gold Dredge and the Oregon State Park area where the Sumpter Gold Dredge now resides. The Historic town of Sumpter Oregon was born amid the rush for gold in Eastern Oregon which began in 1861. Gold was first discovered on the Burnt River and then here in the Sumpter area a year later by five confederate soldiers who soon founded Ft. Sumter, later to be renamed Sumpter by adding the letter "p" to the name. Eventually, one of the largest, continuous gold veins in North America was discovered which then spawned several hundred Hard Rock Gold Mining operatons and even more placer mining operations which added to Sumpter's rapid growth.
Gold continues to be mined from what is known as the largest continuous gold vein in North America, learn more.... Looking for your own Gold Mine? Browse local gold mines for sale
